THIS WAY UP
2009
Reclaimed Board / Acrylic / Mixed Media / Varied Size
The works ‘THIS WAY UP’ address the idea that everything has potential beyond its original purpose, possesing an inherent beauty which is ever present but frequently overlooked. Combining unique painting techniques and found objects. The work raises the status of something as simple as a packing crate or hoarding, revitalising its position from everyday functional object to art object. “Working in a sculpture foundry, brought to my attention that the packing crates, used to protect sculptures and similar art works, often appeared to hold more intrigue & purpose than the art works themselves. Distribution and shipping information, scuffing and random numbers or scribbling on the crates, gave them a greater sense of purpose than just haulage devices “. The pieces are designed to be lent against the wall rather than hung, thus keeping true to the subject & taking on a sculptural as well as painterly dimension.
